Visiting the National Museum of Malaysia (Muzium Negara)
I'm such a fan of museums that I once took wedding photos at the Tokyo National Museum. So, this time, I decided to visit the National Museum of Malaysia, Muzium Negara.
The opening hours for the National Museum of Malaysia are:
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Every day)
Note: You need to enter by 4:30 PM.
Since I found that the visit would take around 1-2 hours, I planned to meet a friend in the morning and make the museum my afternoon activity.
Getting Lost from KL Sentral Station
According to the official website, you can access the National Museum of Malaysia using the following methods:
Access Methods:
GOKL Bus (Free Red Line)
MRT to Muzium Negara Station
Walking from KL Sentral Station
By car (Taxi, Grab, etc.)
Initially, I intended to use method #2 to get to the museum. However, I made a mistake when trying to take the train at Bukit Bintang. I ended up entering a monorail station even though I needed to take the subway.
But then, I realized there was KL Sentral station nearby after looking it up again on Google Maps. I thought, "If Google says I can get to the museum from KL Sentral, let's trust it," and I boarded the monorail. Upon arriving at the station, I relied on Google Maps to find my way to the museum.
However, the problem was that even though the museum was close to the station, I had no idea how to get there. (In fact, I even got lost inside the NU Sentral shopping mall, which is directly connected to the station.)
Unable to figure it out myself, I asked the doorman at the Hilton Hotel, which is next to the station, for directions. He kindly pointed me in the right direction.
I don't have much confidence in my map-reading abilities, so I was relieved to know that the museum wasn't far. However, my joy was short-lived as the path I was directed to was essentially a road with cars zooming past, much like a highway. Feeling uneasy, I asked another hotel staff member I passed by, but they confirmed that this was the correct route.
With no other choice, I continued walking, and eventually, I found it—the museum! You can get a sense of how narrow the road was from the photo.
After this, I used the Muzium Negara station, right in front of the museum, like an underground passage to reach the museum's side of the road, and I successfully entered the museum.
What's in the Museum?
Additionally, as this year marked the museum's 60th anniversary and coincided with Malaysia Day on August 31st, they had special exhibitions going on.
One of the highlights for me was the section displaying the traditional clothing and culture of various ethnic groups from different regions of Malaysia. I could get up close to these exhibits, making it particularly fascinating.
Access: Muzium Negara Station is Highly Recommended
For the return journey, I highly recommend using Muzium Negara Station. It's right in front of the museum, making it convenient and easy to access other tourist spots by train.
On this day, I learned about Malaysia's history at the museum and had a bit of an adventure getting there. I enjoy walking, so I walked quite a bit. If I ever made a wrong train transfer, I'd simply walk to the next station. But if that's not your style, using Grab would likely be the most convenient option.
