Hidden Gem: Exploring KLCC Aquaria, Malaysia

Exploring the KLCC Aquarium in the Heart of the City

In Malaysia, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, the country's predominant Islamic culture means that there are no classes or shorter classes on Friday afternoons due to Friday being the Islamic holy day, when Muslims gather for prayers at mosques. Many language schools in Malaysia organize special tours and activities for students during this time.

This week, there was a tour planned for Friday, but since I had my sights set on a place I wanted to visit on my own, I decided to skip the tour. The destination was KLCC Aquaria, conveniently located within walking distance from the Pavilion shopping mall in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Aquaria KLCC is situated right by the Petronas Twin Towers, and it's located on the edge of a shopping mall.

KLCC Aquaria Offers Photo Opportunities

When I arrived at KLCC Aquaria, it was a weekday Friday afternoon, so there were hardly any lines to get in. At the entrance, they offer to take commemorative photos. However, when I mentioned, "I'm alone, so I don't need this...," the staff kindly said, "You can go ahead," and I skipped the photo.

These photo opportunities can be purchased later, but if you're not interested, you might be able to skip them, even if you're visiting with family.

What's Inside the Aquarium?

there's an area that looks like a touch pool

Inside the aquarium, you'll find various marine and river creatures native to Malaysia and its surrounding regions. As you enter, there's an area that looks like a touch pool, although I was informed that it's not actually for touching when a child tried to reach in and was gently cautioned by the staff.

They also had exhibits of scorpions and some Malaysian insects, including some that might make you go, "Eww!"

As you move further in, you'll reach the highlight of the aquarium—the underwater tunnel!

As you move further in, you'll reach the highlight of the aquarium—the underwater tunnel!

I've been on escalator-type underwater tunnels at places like Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, but this one was much longer!

You're not rushed, and you can leisurely ride on the slow-moving walkway while taking in the sights.

Traditional Dance Show at the Aquarium?

the jellyfish section

After passing through the aquarium's underwater tunnel and viewing the jellyfish section, a souvenir corner, and more, I reached the end.

At this time, there seemed to be a dance show going on just before this area. Dancers in traditional attire were performing in front of one of the aquarium tanks. It was a lively show, but the volume was quite high, making me wonder if it was disturbing the fish in the tanks!

From fish to other marine life to dance shows, the aquarium offered a variety of entertainment.

Discounted Tickets

It's worth noting that ticket prices for the aquarium can vary between Malaysian citizens and foreign tourists. This pricing difference is common in other tourist attractions in Malaysia.

Additionally, you can purchase discounted tickets online through "Klook Travel." They accept payments using a Japanese yen credit card, making it convenient for travelers. This can help you get tickets at a straightforward price.

Concluding the KLCC Aquaria Experience

As mentioned earlier, KLCC Aquaria is conveniently located at the base of the Petronas Twin Towers, so after your visit, you can easily explore the shopping mall.

I took the opportunity to visit Isetan department store for the first time and checked out other shops, which was quite enjoyable. (Although it was a bit disappointing that they didn't have wakame seaweed at Isetan.)
